iPad 3: Worth the upgrade?

Anything Apple brings out is bound to be sensational; each of its gadgets have been revolutionary in one way or the other. The iPod, for instance, revolutionised the entire music industry in the space of a few years; Mac gave an alternative to the dominant Windows; and the iPhone added a dimension to the phone industry no one knew had been missing. So living up to these highs was bound to be a tall order, but Apple accomplished it again in 2010 with the launch of the iPad, arguably one of its most successful products with three million sales in 80 days. And the webosphere is abuzz once again with the launch of the new iPad next week. Let’s see if the new gadget is little more than the usual Apple-related hype or whether it’s actually worth the upgrade.

Things To Look Forward To:

Three-axis Gyroscope
In the iPad 3, Apple introduces the 3-axis gyroscope which has already been seen in iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4. This will make the iPad 3 perform better than its predecessors in gaming, especially when it comes to three-dimensional games.

FaceTime Era
Since iPhone 4 released FaceTime Video Call, FaceTime has started to become quickly updated in many Apple products. And the new iPad, equipped with a camera, has also opted to become part of this FaceTime era.

Lightness
In terms of body weight and thickness, the new iPad is only 8.8 mm, which is 33 percent thinner than the first generation of 13.4 mm thick iPads. In fact, the iPad 3 is thinner than the once “thinnest smart phone in the world”—the iPhone 4—which is 9.7 mm.

Ultra-crisp Retina display
One of the killer features of the new iPad is its Retina display. Doubling the pixel count of the iPad 2 up to 2048 x 1536, the newest iPad offers a sharp, bright screen just like its miniature counterpart, the latest iPhone. The new pixel count is a visually noticeable boost over the last generation iPad, and your eyes will be able to feast on ultra-HD gaming, web browsing and reading. The Retina display’s stunning pixel density should do plenty in the way of making your eyes happier.

Dual-core A5 Processors
As expected, Apple upgraded its A4 processor with the debut of the first generation of iPad, and went into the dual-core era. The new iPad has a A5X processor, still with a 1GHz frequency, but comprising two cores, resulting in twice the performance of the original.

Blazing fast 4G speed
Beyond the ultra high-res screen, the new iPad is Apple’s first foray into 4G. 4G networks are leagues faster than traditional 3G carrier networks, and the new iPad will be able to utilise all the potential of the network.  So now you will experience mobile data speeds that will be much faster than what you might have been used to, making streaming videos—and just about anything else when you’re away from Wi-Fi—a seamless, speedy experience. Naturally, Apple has upped the power of its newest generation iPad. While the iPad 3 uses a processor that shares a lot in common with the iPad 2’s dual-core A5 chip, the new A5X should provide some nice oomph where it counts. This will put the new iPad at level with many high end gaming tablets currently in the market.

Better camera options
The first iPad didn’t come with any camera options, and neither did the iPad 2. While its front-facing camera proved adequate for video chatting with FaceTime, the last-gen tablet’s back-facing shooter packed less than one paltry megapixel for still shots. Not only does the new iPad have a  respectable 5MP lens with 1080p video recording, but Apple is clearly pushing for a photo-friendly experience, throwing an iOS version of its iPhoto image organisation and editing software into the mix. People might not have been wild about tablet photography before, but Apple is clearly positioning the new iPad to create just as much content as it lets you consume.

Before You Run To The Store, However, Do Consider The Following Shortcomings:

Haptic display
When it came to the iPad, the biggest talk over the past month was its haptic display, the feature which causes your phone to vibrate when you tap a key on your touchscreen. By now, virtually every device manufacturer has at least one haptic device under its belt except for Apple and this has yet to change, because the new iPad also lacks the feature. Without the haptic technology, it’s hard not to view the new iPad as only a minor upgrade from last year’s model.

Siri
For some reason, Apple decided not to include Siri in the new iPad. The vocal response software not only provided the ‘S’ in its latest smartphone—the iPhone 4S—but it was enough of a draw to sell millions of new iPhones. Looking at the new iPad specs, the parallels are clear: the new iPad is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, update. The best Apple is offering is voice recognition, which will turn your spoken words into text. This could best be described as Siri Lite, as the new iPad will lack the vocal search capabilities, interactive responses and other features now available on the iPhone 4S. Not only does it provide less incentive to purchase the new iPad, but it also hurts Apple’s brand and ecosystem.
